Jerry Springer Biography: Jerry Springer, a British-born American television host and former politician, has died at the age of 79 in Chicago, Illinois. He was best known for his daytime talk show, The Jerry Springer Show, which featured controversial topics and outrageous guest behavior.

Springer’s family moved to the United States when he was five years old and he later graduated from Tulane University with a political science degree in 1965. He went on to earn a law degree from the Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago three years later. After working on the presidential campaign of Robert F. Kennedy, he began his own political career in Ohio in the early 1970s, serving on Cincinnati’s city council. In 1977, he was elected mayor of the city, but resigned the following year after a scandal involving prostitution. He was re-elected to the council and in 1982 made an unsuccessful bid for the Democratic nomination for governor of Ohio.

In the early 1980s, Springer began working as a reporter for a local television station before becoming an anchor and receiving seven Emmy Awards for commentaries during his tenure. In 1991, he debuted The Jerry Springer Show, initially centred on political issues but later known for its controversial topics, physical fights, profanity, and scantily clad guests. The show was condemned by many as “trash TV” but remained popular with viewers. It inspired an opera that debuted in London in 2003 and won a Laurence Olivier Award for best new musical.

Springer starred in the movie Ringmaster in 1998, which was based on a Springer-esque television show, and acted in several other television sitcoms. He hosted shows such as America’s Got Talent and the Miss Universe Pageant. In 2019, he presided over legal disputes on the show Judge Jerry, which ended in 2022. Springer’s autobiography, Ringmaster! (written with Laura Morton), was published in 1998.

Despite his success in television, Springer remained interested in politics and considered running for the U.S. Senate in 2004. He died on April 27, 2023.
